The firm

The firm

A practice built by two partners, a senior crew, and the intention to do fewer projects, better.

SDLR — San Diego Landscape Remodeling firm vehicle on the coast

Mike and Gio met across a desk. Mike was running his general contracting firm; Gio had been hired to handle the firm's marketing. Somewhere in the middle of that work, two things became clear. The first was that they were both spending too much of their time talking about backyards. The second was that the outdoor work they saw being sold in San Diego — even at the top end of the market — was not what either of them would put on their own homes.

San Diego Landscape Remodeling is what came out of that conversation. A separate company, built on purpose and built small.

The partners

The partners

Mike

Mike holds the Class B general contractor's license that San Diego Landscape Remodeling operates under — CSLB License #1139785. He has been in the trades for more than twenty-five years, with a specialty materials background — paver, stone, tile, and finish carpentry — that lets our outdoor work use details, systems, and supplier relationships most landscape-remodel firms do not have access to.

He lives in Bonita — drives the same streets we work on every day, because they're his community.

Gio

Gio came into building by way of branding. For several years he has run a media and marketing agency serving a catalog of companies — most of them in construction, design, or home services — which is how he met Mike in the first place. He handles the firm's design direction, the client relationship, and the project management. He is not a licensed contractor; the construction side of the work is Mike's license, Mike's judgment, and our Field Lead's hands.

The Field Lead, and the crew

Our Field Lead runs the crew on the ground. He has spent twenty-five years building high-end outdoor projects in San Diego County — paver, stone, concrete, structure, finish work. Our second senior lead has a similar tenure. The rest of the crew has been hand-picked from within that network. Combined field experience on a typical jobsite is more than fifty years.

That number matters because outdoor construction is a craft business dressed up as a commodity one. Joints are either plumb or they are not. A patio either drains correctly or it floods in the first storm. The difference is time with a trowel in your hand, and we have a lot of it.

Philosophy

How we think about the work.

We believe three things about outdoor remodeling that are, by the standards of our industry, unusual.

The first is that the client is a person, and the relationship is the product. A patio you don't enjoy paying for is not a well-made patio, even if the grout lines are perfect.

The second is that there are fewer good projects than there are contractors, so we take fewer. A short list of projects a year, done without rushing, with both founders personally on site, is the only business model that protects the work.

The third is that we are responsible for our work after the invoice is paid. That is why the 10-Month Walk-Through is built into every project. And why, if you hire us, you will have both of our cell phones from the first conversation onward.
